MONTH OF THE WOLF: Let's start from the beginning, where were you born?
David Suhadolnik: Spokane, Washington. Eastern Washington State.
MOTW: When did you move to North County?
DS: We moved to North County when I was five, we lived in Del Mar.
MOTW: How old were you when you started surfing Seaside?
DS: Started surfing Seaside when I was twelve, so 7th grade. Actually, maybe 6th grade. Nick and I would take the bus up from Del Mar with Jensen Hassett and surf Swamis and Seaside. But yeah, since I was twelve.
MOTW: What's the biggest shift change you've seen at this particular spot over the years? And the new kids coming up, who stands out to you?
DS: Shift changes for sure it's like the "industry bro" spot now just because it's so easily accessible. It's cool, I'm cool with it. There's definitely a lot of Rip Curl guys, Hurley guys that come and surf it. I'm psyched to watch them surf the place. All of us are stoked to watch them surf it.
MOTW: It's the North County version of Lowers.
DS: Absolutely, I definitely agree with that. I'd say as far as kids coming out of here Jake Marshall, Nick Marshall ripper too. All the Marshall's rip, all three of them. Austin Ware is a notable guy, he's probably one of the best surfers to come out of here. Rob Machado goes without saying. I like surfing with the old school guys like Paul Roach and Tim Frisk, there's definitely a good crew of guys on the reef. Not a lot of change, fuck, since I started surfing here at twelve it was like Nick and I, couple Solana kids that brought us over like Eric Burger and Jimmy Drummond. There weren't that many groms back then. We surfed here with you, Ryan Burch, Eric Snortum, Ian Barry.
MOTW: Fuck, I have old VHS tapes of those years! 2003 through 2006. We got to pull those out.
DS: Definitely! Seriously like the last three years I moved away to Santa Barbara and came back and noticed that there are so many groms here. It's insane, a ton of rippers. A lot of Encinitas kids that are surfing down here and just ripping! Liam Gold, Colin Richardson, Jade Morgan.
MOTW: Would you say this your favorite wave to surf when your home?
DS: Absolutely, I'd surf this wave every day if I can. I don't really surf other spots unless it's pumping. If you and I go south to the Reefs or Blacks. You could catch me at Swami's. But honestly, I don't surf other spots.
MOTW: Who inspires you the most?
DS: Obviously Dane Reynolds is a huge one. Probably because of him I ride smaller boards. I'm 6'1 and I ride 5'6's, 5'7's strictly. The past two years I haven't ridden a proper shortboard.
MOTW: No one has.
DS: Yeah, I kinda get bummed on it. I wish I did, but I just don't. I'll surf a 5'9 PinTail with a little more volume, width a little higher. That whole swell when we were down there I rode that and could still scratch into 'em.
MOTW: I remember the day.
MOTW: Don't you think Burch has had a big impact on that here? Like guys jumping on the bandwagon making their own boards.
DS: Yeah, yeah! Derrick Disney kills it in that department. There's another kid here Zach Flores, he shapes all his boards. I've been talking to him because I just shaped my first board a week ago. Derrick and I made The BIn up in Del Mar, it's a shaping, glassing room, it's pretty rad. But yeah I feel like that will be something more and more people will start to do, shape their own boards or at least have someone help them shape their first board. It's pretty cool.
MOTW: It is! It's sick you guys are doing it.
MOTW: What about extracurriculars outside of surfing?
DS: I don't know man. Well, I do a little art actaully. I wish I had more time to do it. I honestly feel like I just work to get by and then surf only. I pretend I'm a paid professional surfer because I surf so much. But I'm not which is rad. I don't care. Spend time with the girlfriend, hang with the family. You could say shaping will be one in the future.
DS: I like a lot of grunge. My dad's from Seattle so Nirvana definitely. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden you could throw in there. My dad raised my brother's and I on grunge because it was so big in the early 90's. Neil Young as well, Santana. Wolf & Lamb, Soulclap, Nicolas Jaar.
MOTW: Upcoming trips?
DS: Not at the moment. You could say at the end of the year I want to go to INDO, maybe OZ. Other than that I'd try to get down to Mainland over the summer. I go to Hawaii every year, the last three years I've gone for a month every time. I've been going there since I was grom. I definitely need to broaden my horizons with travel. Tahiti would be amazing.
MOTW: That's a wrap David. Thanks!
DS: Sick! Thanks Josh!
